Socrates was an ancient Greek philosopher who lived from approximately 470 to 399 BCE and is considered one of the founders of Western philosophy. He is best known for developing the Socratic method of questioning to stimulate critical thinking and expose the weaknesses in beliefs and ideas. Although Socrates wrote nothing himself, his philosophical ideas and methods were documented by his students, particularly Plato, and had a profound influence on Western thought.
